Decreased libido in women: common causes

Low libido in women is common, normal at certain times of life, and rarely due to a single cause. Understanding what influences it is already a big step towards clarity. Here are the most common causes, explained simply.

Hormonal causes

Hormones play a central role in desire. Several periods can cause it to fluctuate: postpartum and breastfeeding, cycle-related variations, certain thyroid disorders, or menopause, with a decrease in estrogen and testosterone. These variations are physiological: they do not mean that "something is wrong."

Stress, fatigue, and mental state

Desire needs mental availability. Chronic stress, anxiety, a depressive episode, mental load, or lack of sleep naturally reduce desire. The body, mobilized by daily life, puts sexuality on hold – a common and reversible mechanism.

The couple and the relational context

Routine, unspoken tensions, a lack of complicity, or not enough time together directly impact desire. Here, communication often matters more than "technique."

Medical causes and medications

Certain medical conditions (pain during intercourse, chronic illnesses, persistent fatigue) and certain medications – notably several antidepressants, and sometimes hormonal contraception – can decrease libido. If a decrease coincides with a new treatment, it is helpful to discuss it with your doctor rather than stopping alone.

Lifestyle

Sleep, physical activity, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle: lifestyle influences overall energy, and therefore desire. Nothing spectacular, but real long-term levers.

A useful notion: "reactive" desire

For many women, desire does not appear "spontaneously" before intimacy, but is triggered once the situation is engaged. This is normal functioning, and not a sign of disinterest.

When to consult

If the decrease is long-lasting, causes distress, or is associated with pain, a doctor, gynecologist, or sexologist can help identify the cause. At Kyel, we favor a gentle and holistic approach, with a plant-based, mineral, and amino acid cure designed for regularity. Discover our approach.
